Permission to Rest
Today is Labor Day. A holiday created in the late 1800s when workers were fighting for fair working conditions, dignity, and the right to rest. What started as a movement against twelve-hour workdays and seven-day weeks eventually gave us the protections we take for granted now: weekends, regulated hours, and paid time off. For most, Labor Day is a day off when the office is officially closed and rest is not only accepted but expected.
But the job search doesn’t come with a federal holiday. There’s no office to lock its doors, no PTO to disconnect. Which means you can job search on weekends, holidays, or late into the evening– causing a fog of obligation. You think about the jobs you could be applying for, the messages you could be sending, or the tweaks you could be making to your resume. Until you get the job, the work of looking for work never feels done, and it’s hard to step away without guilt.
That’s why today's message is simple; rest is important. It's an essential part of work because it actually makes you more productive for the work that will be there tomorrow.
So, here's your permission to rest this Labor Day. Immerse in a hobby, go for a long walk, spend time with family, or do something that brings you joy. Show up stronger tomorrow because you gave yourself rest today.
